Connecting Kids to Christ in His Creation

Camp Viola is a private non-profit Christian organization founded by Miss Viola Burks.

In the 1920’s, Miss Viola Burks was Executive Secretary of the LaGrange Welfare Association. For some years, Miss Vi had witnessed many difficult family situations and saw a need to help children who, for various reasons, were missing so much in life. She obtained funds from the Churches of LaGrange to provide a week’s outing at the very first encampment in 1926. In 1927, Miss Vi purchased 123 acres of land near Mountville, GA, and in 1928, the children’s camp became known as Camp Viola.

Miss Vi, as she was lovingly known, desired to provide a camp for children, at no cost to their families, that would give them the opportunity for outdoor activities and spiritual enrichment. Her legacy remains in the hearts and activities of many local churches and volunteers.

As in 1926, Camp Viola continues to provide the summer camp experience for children who would not experience camp by any other means. Camp Viola provides Bible teaching, praise and worship, recreation/sports, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, great meals, and lots of fun to hundreds of children each summer. Camp Viola, through Troup County Churches, also has provided weekend and holiday camp activities during the school year.

Today Camp Viola is able to continue its mission through the generous support of the faith community and other financial partners. Many churches in Troup County host weeks of summer camp at Camp Viola. Others partner with us through regular donations and volunteering for workdays and other projects at camp. These partners help us as we continue our mission to provide a week of Christ-centered summer camp for children in Troup County and the surrounding area.
